New project: The Willowcrest

I got myself a Willowcrest. It was partially built, not that well for that matter, and in dire need of tlc. It came with a big box of parts.

The shoe is there for scale.

The stairs were already built but not to my liking. So I ripped them apart and did it my way.

Drying time with books to flatten the kitchen floor. Droogtijd met zware kost als gewicht.

The painting is a print (internet) of There is the Temple (Parahi Te Marae) by Paul Gauguin. I love Gauguin and each house is a temple to its inhabitants.

When building this house, certain areas like the stairs of the first and second floor, have to be completely finished before continuing to build because they become unreachable. The second floor stairs take up a lot of space and are difficult to relocate. Elizabeth from Studio E-miniatures wrestled with that problem and linked to other bloggers and their solution.
I chose to follow http://elaineziman.blogspot.com/2013/06/willowcrest-attic-staircase-solution.html It is essentially a mock staircase that ends up outside the house but it looks like you could go to the attic and that's good enough to for me.
I will not make a door, just a few steps and a wall. It's a lot of work for something you won't see. Especially since I have plans to move the windows in the bedroom which changes that line of sight.

I love working on the house in the garden.

The tinies are helping, well sort of anyway De kleintjes helpen. Soort van.

Little steps in the making Trapje in de maak

That's where I'm at for now. I will work on the wall of the mock stairs, the railing at the top of the stairs, the window trim and some kind of window treatment.

I also want to hinge my front door but have never hinged anything. If you know of a clear pictorial, tutorial, explanation, please let me know!

Passen mooi in modern interieur.
    Fijne dag toegewenst.
    Groetjes, Ilona

  2. Oh, your new project is a Willowcrest! What fun… and your first steps are already so promising. And there's even a Gauguin already hanging in the hallway! Your decision to make the stairs your way was a good one and you came up with a good solution for this logical problem this kit brings along with it. But now I wonder - are your little helpers more helpful when they're "helping" around in the building or when they're helping to extinct the icecream supplies? ;O)

    Hugs

    1. Hello Brigit,
I hope all the ideas I have in my head for the Willowcrest actually translate in real dollhouse life!
My little helpers are especially efficient at making ice-cream disappear. I don't complain, while eating ice-cream, they are not interfering with my choice of wallpaper etc...
      To be continued!
      Hugs

  3. Hi Veronique! I am so happy to see you have a Willowcrest to "play" with! It is a fascinating and complicated building... but there are so many things you can do with it! I am almost sorry that I have followed most of the directions exactly.... there are some places where I just had to do it my way! :) Your way is already looking so wonderfully fresh and clean and modern! There are some blogs out there that deal with the problems this kit presents... but I never found one to deal with the hinges... I just did them my way! (Which is not necessarily the best way!) I mounted them on the surface face of the doors and wall trim, (an old fashioned rustic method) because I didn't think the end grain of the layered door pieces would be strong enough for the screws to hold properly. The modern way is to hide the hinges between the door and the door opening but this means the hinge screws or nails must go into the side of the door and frame.... I know it is really hard to describe without pictures! If you swap out the kit doors for "real" ready made doors, it might be easier, but those don't fit into the kit openings... which means something must adjust... Which is why I just attached mine to the surface face and will live with the very visible hinges! I love seeing what you are doing.... and especially what fun your helpers are having too!!! :):)

    1. Thank you Betsy! It is indeed a complicated building! The roof will be a challenge I suspect.
As for the hinges, you are right, nobody blogged about the hinges. I would like to hide the hinges but like you, I fear the wood won't hold them. Ilona suggested a pin, just like the ready made doors. That's worth investigating. I would rather use the original door to keep the specific look of this house.
      To be continued!
      Big hugs!

    1. Thank you Elizabeth! (Blogger did not notify me that I had comments).
In the meantime you have seen the attic stairs. I am trying to keep the momentum going but am waiting for materials and that is slowing down the process somewhat.
