Œil de Bœuf (French Window)

The heatwave continues and it hasn't rained in a long time. I leave water and food in the garden for hedgehogs and birds but the garden itself has to fend for itself as we are being asked to conserve water. I have kept the grass long and there is plenty of shade so most of it is ok but the trees are already losing their leaves. My garden is covered in leaves and it is almost like fall.


De hittegolf gaat door. Dat hoef ik jullie niet te vertellen noch te vertalen, dat ga ik dus ook niet doen. We zitten allemaal in hetzelfde schuitje. Ik zet water en voedsel neer voor de egels en de vogels. Het lijkt wel herfst in de tuin met alle gele bladeren en verschroeide bloemknoppen.

One would think that a country covered in water and canals would have lots of water and although we do, it's not always where we want it.


I understand now why things take longer in tropical countries. Excessive heat slows everything down. We are not used to these temperatures and most of us don't have air-conditioning. Last time we had a similar summer was 1976 and I remember it because I could see the air rippling from the heat and the last days of school were terrible!

Ik begrijp nu wel waarom alles trager gaat in de tropen. Abnormale hitte vertraagt alles. Wij zijn er niet aan gewend en hebben meestal geen airconditioning. De laatste zomer die zo was was, was 1976 en ik weet nog goed hoe ik de lucht zag trillen en hoe zwaar de laatste schooldagen waren.

Needless to say progress on the house has been minimal. I did however assemble the kit for the French Window, called Œil de Bœuf, Ox's Eye. I purchased the kit from Catherine Ferouelle. While I was painting it, I decided to give the exterior of the bathtub a make-over.


Het spreekt voor zich dat de voortgang aan het huis minimaal is. Ik heb wel de kit van Catherine Ferouelle gemaakt en geverfd. Het is een Frans raam, ook wel ossenoog genaamd.
Terwijl ik bezig was heb ik meteen de buitenkant van het bad onder handen genomen.

Dit was het voor deze week. Als de hitte en droogte zo doorgaan dan zal er volgende week niet veel meer uit mijn handen komen. Tenzij mijn regendans vruchten afwerpt 😉

And now for something completely different....

Because a friend was coming to visit Friday, I cleaned house, dusted, vacuumed and mopped the floor. As it is rarely so organized and clean 😂 I decided to work on something small so I could enjoy the fruits of my hard work a little longer.

Omdat een vriendin langs zou komen, heb ik mijn woonkamer opgeruimd, gestoft, gezogen en gedweild. Omdat het zelden zo opgeruimd is 😂, wilde ik er zo lang mogelijk van genieten dus besloot ik aan iets kleins te werken.

I made a washing machine and some clothes pins.
The washing machine is made from an old box that contained a miniature (Streets Ahead) and a tea light cup, some stainless steel sticky plastic, a rubber ring, left over transparent plastic and some printies from Internet.
For the printies I googled washing machine, inside washing machine drum (for the back of the tea light cup) and grater (for the side of the drum).

Ik heb een wasmachine en wasknijpers gemaakt. De wasmachine is van een leeg doosje waar een miniatuur in zat (Streets Ahead), een waxinelichtje, een rubberen ring, RVS plakplastic, restje transparant plastic en wat printjes. Voor de printjes heb ik gegooled: wasmachine, wasmachinetrommel (voor de achterkant van het waxinelichtje), rasp (voor de zijkant van het waxinelichtje).

The heatwave continues and I feel blessed to live so close to water. My friends and I went swimming this morning, before it got busy.

De hittegolf gaat maar door and ik ben dankbaar dat ik zo dicht bij water woon. Mijn vriendinnen en ik gingen vanmorgen zwemmen, voor het druk werd.

This dog is spending the day on the boat with his parents but was ferried back after a bathroom break on land.

Deze hond spendeert de dag aan boord met zijn baasjes en werd hier teruggependeld van een WC-stop aan land.

And the Tinies? They've gone, off to the beach!

En de kleintjes? Die zijn ervandoor, naar het strand!

Panic

As I was getting to building the roof I discovered that the roof cornice was missing. Big panic! How was I going to support the roof?
And then there was the case of me completely not understanding the instructions and therefore not knowing if that mattered at all or not.
After a few deep breaths, I solved the matter of the roof cornice and I joined More Minis Dollhouses' group on Facebook and asked for help. Turns out what I didn't understand was about trims that I will get to right at the end. More Minis Dollhouses is I think the best resource for all kind of dollhouses.

Terwijl ik dichterbij het bouwen van het dak kwam, ontdekte ik dat de rand waar het dak op rust ontbrak. Paniek! Hoe moest ik nou het dak vastmaken?
En dan was er nog de kwestie van instructies die ik niet begreep. Ik wist dus ook niet of de onbegrepen instructies belangrijk waren of niet. Na een paar keer diep ademhalen had ik een oplossing voor het dak bedacht en was ik lid van de Facebook group van More Minis Dollhouses en vroeg ik om hulp. De instructies bleken om afwerkingsinstructies te gaan die voor mij pas aan het einde van toepassing zijn. Overigens is More Minis Dollhouses de beste informatie bron voor allerlei typen poppenhuizen.

I had also read on MMD's page that recreating the roof from card would work much better than using the pre cut pieces of wood. Because of my home made roof support, that was the only option anyway. Besides I had decided from the start that I wanted a zinc roof so instead of having to cover the wood, this saved me a step in the process.

Ik had ook gelezen op MMD's pagina dat het dak beter van karton gemaakt kon worden ipv de geleverde houten delen. Omdat ik toch al anders uitkwam door de dakconstructie was het sowieso de enige optie en vanaf het begin wist ik dat ik een zinken dak wilde. In plaats van het hout te moeten bedekken, scheelde dit mij een extra stap..

I have hung the attic light and there will be a second one, once I have decided where the washing machine will go.
The walls are, as usual, not glued down. Waiting for the last wires to go behind them.
The floor is cork. It came from a 1:1 roll of cork wallpaper.

Ik heb de zolder lamp opgehangen, er komt nog een lichtpunt zodra ik weet waar de wasmachine komt.
De muren zijn zoals gewoonlijk nog niet gelijmd in afwachting van de laatste elektriciteitsdraden.
De vloer is kurk van een 1:1 rol kurk behang.

 I did not use the chimney in the middle of the attic and as a result the roof has no support holding it up. I will ask Santa to be very careful when landing! ;-) Ik heb de schoorsteen midden op zolder niet gebruikt met als gevolg dat er niets is dat het dak omhoog houdt. Ik zal de kerstman vragen om heel voorzichtig te landen ;-)

 In between the many drying times, I spray painted the interior of the tub (ex soap dish) Tijdens een van de vele droogmomenten, heb ik de binnenkant van het bad (ex zeephouder) wit gespoten.

 The wallpaper in the attic will be glued last, when all the attic wiring is done, as will the last rooftop panel.  Het behang op zolder zal worden vastgeplakt als alle elektriciteitsdraden getrokken zijn, net als het laatste dakpaneel.

 I still have all the trims to add, but that can only be done when the wallpaper is glued. Alle kozijnen en afwerkingslatjes moeten nog geplakt worden maar dat kan pas als het behang vast zit.

I am nearing the end of the big building works. I still have the balcony and porch to make. The first owner of the house removed the porch roof from the front wall so I will have to glue it back.
Then there's rendering and painting the outside and all the trims and brackets and frilly things. In other words, I am nowhere near being done!

Ik kom in de buurt van het einde van het grote werk. Het balkon en de overkapping moeten nog gemaakt worden. De eerste eigenaar van dit huis heeft de overkapping weggezaag. Ik zal hem dus weer moeten vastplakken.
Dan wordt de buitenkant gestuukt en geschilderd en moeten alle versierselen nog worden aangebracht. Met andere woorden, ik ben nog lang niet klaar.

Choices - keuzes

I continued with the build despite the heat. I added both the bays and I extended the one on the bathroom side. To keep the house light and easy to carry, I used foam board. It will all be rendered so you won't be able to see the different materials.
I also added the wall thingies on the front that go along the entire height of the house.

I added the dormer walls and the back wall in the attic.  That's when it got complicated. Lots of small parts and words I don't know. It was too hot to really get stuck in so I started on the bathroom.
I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Ik ben verder gegaan met bouwen ondanks de hitte. Ik heb de erkers toegevoegd en de erker aan de badkamer kant uitgebreid. Om het huis licht en draagbaar te houden heb ik foam board gebruikt. De buitenkant wordt gestuukt dus dan zie je de verschillende materialen niet meer.
Ik heb ook de muur dingen aan de zijvoorkant toegevoegd, die over de hele hoogte van het huis gaan.

Ik heb de muren voor de dakkapellen en de achterwand op zolder geplaatst en toen werd het ingewikkeld met veel kleine stukjes en benamingen die mij niets zeggen. Het was te warm om me erin te verdiepen dus ben ik aan de badkamer begonnen.

And then the house took a piece of me. Literally. En toen nam het huis letterlijk een hap van me.

The paper is just to protect the freshly painted floor Het papier is slechts om de pas geschilderde vloer te beschermen.

 It's strange that on the picture it looks like one is yellow, and one is not because in real life they are both equally bright and white. I will however dim them a bit because I will add two lights by the mirror and I still want it to look cosy.

Het is vreemd dat een lamp geler lijkt dan de andere want in het echt zijn ze beide even wit en fel. Ik ga ze wel wat dimmen want er komen nog twee lampjes aan weerskanten van de spiegel en het moet niet te fel worden.

Now, what colour to choose? The grey circle is to simulate the mirror that will be in a French window.  It will be painted an aged grey. 

I love all things lilac, purple and pink and therefore would pick the lilac. I associate it with luxury however the ice blue looks good too.

The light yellow and clay colour fit extremely well but seem to me to be too much on the safe side. So what to choose?

Welke kleur zal ik kiezen? De grijze cirkel stelt de spiegel voor die in een Frans raam zal zijn. Het zal in oud grijs geverfd worden.

Ik ben dol op alle kleuren paars, roze en lila en heb dus een voorkeur voor de lila optie. Ik associeer dat met luxe maar de ijsblauwe muur ziet er ook mooi uit.

Het licht gele en de klei kleur passen wel heel goed bij de tegels maar lijken me wat veilig. Dus wat te kiezen?

I will have to take on the top floor so wish me luck!

Ik zal me op de bovenste verdieping moeten storten dus wens me sterkte!
