Last few days, fall really made an entrance and it has been raining a lot. Perfect weather to stay in and do some work big and small.
I have finally made the kitchen top and sink. And yes, I did use the McDonald's sauce cup :-)
I will use something else for a drain thingy, but I sprayed that earlier and it is now drying together with some of the parts for the faucet.
As are the kitchen cabinets
En ook het keuken onderstel.
While everything is drying on bits of paper, I made a little Tree of Life out of wire and nail polish, which can be seen here.

Choices, choices, choices - Keuzes, keuzes, keuzes
That moment when you wake up with a jolt, in the middle of the night, because in your dreams you encountered a decoration snag.
I went back to sleep and when I woke up this morning, I had made up my mind. If only I could have done the work while sleeping too :-)
My house is a house for my Ancestors. All of them. So covering everything form the Stone Age (and before) to my closest ancestor, being my father who died in the 20th century. I therefore do not have a specific period to adhere to when decorating. It's a house where each of my ancestors has to find something familiar. I'll be looking for a bear skin and a mammoth tusk and a tv with the huge bulge at the back and vinyl records. The A-Team, being the janitors for the house, can keep their modern 21st century gadgets in their own little abode (yet to be built, of course).
Mijn huis is voor mijn voorouders. Allemaal.
So despite the glorious white sink I nicked at McDonald's, mostly inspired by the many images of shabby kitchens on the internet, that will not fit in my kitchen. I have to go for a style that spans a bit more Dutch history and a checkered sink and granite top seem to be more in keeping.
This is now the challenge that lays before me...
Dit is nu de uitdaging voor me....
My mother's family tree has it's roots in the province of Limburg. That region of The Netherlands is above sea-level, has never been flooded nor is it sinking, so there are some interesting archaeological finds: pots, jewelry from the Neolithic, to Germanic and Roman age and everything in between. The Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden in Leiden has an interesting exhibit with some beautiful pieces, I can look at and try to replicate.
Saves me shooting a bear and digging for a mammoth tusk. With the picture of my grandmother, the painting of my great grand-father and a piano (yet to be assembled), that side of the family is covered.
My father's lineage stems from the province of Zeeland.Though mostly known abroad (probably) because of the big flood of 1953, Zeeland also has some interesting archaeological finds. The votive stones dedicated to the Goddess Nehalennia, were found off the coast of Colijnsplaat and are also exhibited in Leiden.
A Goddess of the Netherlands in Roman times with her own contemporary Temple, it seems fitting that she somehow gets a little corner in the ancestor house.
Another striking symbol of Zeeland is the "Zeeuwse knoop", a decorated "button" that was worn on the traditional costume.
While I was visiting my friend this summer, she had a lovely Zeeuwse Knoop as a garden decoration and I will try to replicate that to fit in the kitchen, along with some of the traditional fabric used for aprons (Schortenbont).
Well anyway, that's the plan. Who knows what I'll dream of tonight!
I also have to tell you about my trip to the fair yesterday in Rijswijk. Only 20 minutes drive for me, so I popped in for a visit. I just am not a fair-kinda-person. Too much to see, too many people, too many choices. I did however walk the entire fair twice. It is nice to be with a large crowd that has the same interest and I had some nice conversations. I do believe however that with the explosion of Pinterest, Etsy and blogging, there is very little "new" to be seen. It was nice to feel some materials, to see a few things up close but I saw nothing that really amazed me. Is it just me? Was I expecting too much? I'd love to hear your thoughts on fairs and exhibitions in the Internet age.
I did of course buy a few things (duh!). A table and chairs and a fridge. Of course this morning while doing some kitchen-worktop research, I stumbled on a tutorial to make just such a chair. Ah well, I don't have any wood anyway and these were a good deal. I love making things, but working with wood doesn't really attract me.
I am still thinking about the chimney for the stove. This appeals to me:
But the pipe on my stove bends to the back, so I don't know how to solve that yet.
This is what the kitchen looks like so far. Nothing is glued yet. I still have to paint the door and build the kitchen cabinets with that checkered sink and granite worktop. I also want a kitchen hutch but cannot decide on the style.
I chose a rather bold wallpaper design, but when I saw it in a magazine I just fell in love....
Like I said: choices, choices, choices.....
Zoals ik al zei: keuzes, keuzes, keuzes...
