A post about cows - Een bericht over koeien

Occasionally I come up for air from the mini world and participate in the real world. Really :-)
Last weekend, it was one of those "come out and play outside" kinda days.

Soms kom ik wel eens boven water uit de mini wereld om deel te nemen aan de echter wereld. Echt waar :-) Afgelopen weekend was het zo'n "kom buiten spelen" dag.

I get my veggies from a local farmer that is working close to the Community Supported Agriculture concept. So I go there every week and dig out whatever I need. The season is coming to an end now and with all the rain lately the veggie plot is soggy and so is the grasland where the cows are grazing. They are knee high in the mud.

Ik haal mijn groente bij een boerderij die een beetje volgens het gemeenschapslandbouw concept werkt. Ik ga er iedere week mijn groenten oogsten. Het seizoen is bijna ten einde en met alle regen van de afgelopen tijd is de tuin drassig en zo ook het grasland voor de koeien. Ze staan tot aan hun knieën in de modder.

In spring we celebrate Dancing Cow Day when the cows go outside for the first time since winter. That's when they jump and run, play with each other and roll around in the fresh spring gras. Hence the Dancing Cow. Lots of people come up to see that in spring so my farmer thought it would be nice to have a "welcome back inside" day too. And that was last Sunday.
To my happy surprise there were a lot of people there too! It's good to see people taking an interest in where their food comes from and what organic farming is all about.

In de lente vieren we "Dansende koeien dag"(zie Koe Alert) als de koeien voor het eerst weer naar buiten gaan. Ze dansen en huppelen van vreugde. Veel mensen komen dan kijken dus de boer dacht dat het wel leuk zou zijn om een "terug naar de stal" dag te vieren. En dat was afgelopen zondag.
Tot mijn vreugde waren er veel mensen. Het is goed dat mensen weer belangstelling krijgen voor de herkomst van hun voedsel en interesse tonen in biologisch boeren.

There was a short downpoor of rain with a beautiful rainbow and after that it was blue skies and sunshine again!
Behalve een korte hevige stortbui met bijbehorende regenboog was het een stralende dag.

Some cows were wearing flower leis :-) I think they secretly loved it! 

Sommige koeien waren versierd met bloemenslingers :-) Ik geloof dat ze het stiekem wel leuk vonden.

 There was even some accordion music and they were munching away, not minding us much.

Er was zelfs een accordeonist en de koeien aten gewoon verder, ze trokken zich weinig van ons aan.

 A lot of young ones.

Anyway, it was a fun day. Soon we will be celebrating the end of the harvest with a big communal meal in the barn and then it is over until spring. In the meantime, the farmer will make a new garden plan and continue to collect feathers for me. I'm planing to use them on miniature chickens. Still on my to do list!

Het was een leuke dag. Binnenkort sluiten we het oogstseizoen af met een gezamenlijke maaltijd in de schuur en dan is het afgelopen tot de lente. In de tussentijd zal de boer een nieuw tuinplan maken en doorgaan met verzamelen van veren voor mij. Ik ben van plan om ze te gebruiken om mini kippen te maken. Dat staat nog op mijn actielijst.

On the miniature front I'm still trying things out in regards to floating stairs and brick décor. I'd rather try it a few times and get it right than start somewhere and make mistakes. So not much to show you.

Op het mini front ben ik nog steeds bezig met uittesten van zwevende trappen en stenen bekleding. Ik probeer het liever een paar keer uit dan dat ik zomaar begin en de mist in ga. Dus nog niets om te delen.

However, while digging in my old Barbie boxes for furniture that might be used as is or altered, I came across some shoes I made when I was 10 years old. They won't win any prizes but for a 10 year old, I got the idea. I do love the red platform sandals. As for the sneakers, if the big platform was painted it would look just right for the late 70's...

Wel ging ik tussen de Barbie spullen neuzen naar meubels die ik kon gebruiken of veranderen en ik vond schoentjes die ik gemaakt heb toen ik 10 jaar oud was. Ik zal er geen prijs mee winnen maar voor een 10-jarige had ik er toch kijk op. De rode sandalen vind ik wel leuk en als je de zool van de gympies schildert, dan is toch echt een jaren 70 schoen.

I also found a pencil sharpener that will go nicely in the sitting room of the big house.
Ik vond ook een puntenslijper die heel goed zal staan in de salon van het grote huis.

A new house - Een nieuw huis

"What?" you say," the first one is not even finished!.
Sigh, I know...
But see, it's like this:
While at Halloween my ancestors were partying away in the Ancestor House, Art and Angélique had no place to retire to and had to stay and party on. Now there are worse things, I know, but these two are newly-weds, they want to smooch somewhere private :-)
So the plan of making them their own house grew in my mind. Besides, the Ancestor House goes from 0 to 20th century, which means no flat screen TV nor tablet pc and mobile phones and we already know Art likes his gadgets.
So while the first house is to honour the past, the A-team are very much living now.

"Wat?", zeg je, "het eerste is nog niet eens klaar!"
Zucht, ik weet het...
Maar kijk, het zit zo:
Tijdens Halloween waren mijn voorouders flink aan het feesten en A&A hadden geen rustig plekje om zich terug te trekken. Zij waren dus verplicht om mee te feesten. Er zijn ergere dingen, ik weet het, maar zij zijn net getrouwd en willen zich nog graag terugtrekken om te knuffelen.
Dus het plan om voor hen een eigen huis te maken kreeg vorm. Daarnaast is het Voorouderhuis bedoeld van 0 tot de 20ste eeuw dus geen flatscreens, geen tablets, geen mobiele telefoons. En we weten dat Art dol is op zijn gadgets.
Dus daar waar het eerste huis een eerbetoon is aan het verleden, leven Art en Angélique in het hier en nu.

While browsing on the net, I came across a thousand options: shabby cottage, log cabin and more. I even found complete plans I could have scaled down. That was the initial plan. Building something from scratch, preferably from foam core to minimize the weight. Well that was the plan anyway.

Al zoekend op internet kwam ik talloze ideeën tegen: van shabby cottages, tot houten hutten en meer. Ik kwam zelfs tekeningen tegen om een huis te bouwen die ik had kunnen verkleinen. Dat was ook het oorspronkelijke plan. Zelf iets bouwen van "schuimkarton" (hoe heet dit eigenlijk in het Nederlands... maquette karton?), om het gewicht te beperken. Dat was het plan.

Tot ik dit tegen kwam bij de kringloop:

I waited a week, to make sure I still liked it. I had some doubts about the ceiling height too but decided to go back to measure it and there was potential to make it fit.
While I was there, I also found this:

Ik wachtte een week om er zeker van te zijn dat ik het nog steeds leuk vond en ik had twijfels over de maten. Dus ik ging terug met een meetlint en ik zag mogelijkheden.
Terwijl ik daar was, vond ik ook dit:

At €4,50 is was half the price of the other one and would make a perfect home for my little friends, but I thought it was a little too straight up and simple. This would make a great general store though some day. So while I was there, I got that too :-)

Voor € 4,50, de helft van het andere huis, zou het een prima huis voor mijn twee vriendjes zijn maar ik vond het wat recht toe recht aan en saai. Dit zou in de toekomst wel een goede winkel kunnen zijn, dus omdat ik er toch was, heb ik dat ook maar meegenomen :-)

Back to the house for my little travellers. Terug naar het huis van mijn twee reizigers.

The top floor is a little small and the ceiling too low. De bovenste verdieping is wat klein en het plafond te laag

 The bottom floor is all right. De beneden verdieping is wel goed.

 This would have to be opened up. Dit zal geopend moeten worden

Also, I did not like the plastic spiral stairs, so they had to go too.
Ook vind ik de plastic draaitrap niet mooi dus die moest er ook uit.

The last few days I have been demolishing and gathering scraps of wood and trying out things.
I decided to make it an upside down house: bed and bathroom downstairs, kitchen and living room upstairs.
De afgelopen dagen ben ik bezig geweest met slopen en verzamelen van hout en ben ik wat dingen gaan uitproberen. Ik heb besloten er een omgekeerd huis van te maken met de bad- en slaapkamer beneden en de keuken en woonkamer boven.

 I took out the second floor. Ik heb de verdieping eruit gehaald.

 And cut through the side to allow for sliding doors from the master bedroom.
De zijkant open gezaagd om een schuifpui te kunnen maken in de slaapkamer.

 Now, I cannot draw so bear with me... Nou kan ik niet tekenen dus ik hoop dat het te volgen is...

I will increase the floor space of the living room by building a glass "box" on the side and the stairs and entrance will also be built outwards.
Ik wil de oppervlakte van de woonkamer vergroten door een glazen uitbouw op de eerste verdieping aan de zijkant te bouwen. Ook zullen de gang en trap in een uitbouw aan de voorkant zitten.

Everything is supposed to be very modern, with lots of glass.
Alles moet strak en modern zijn met veel glas.

This is me trying out "glass" floating stairs. I happen to have lot's of acrylic sheets, so I can afford a mistake or two.

Hier heb ik even geprobeerd of ik een zwevende trap kan maken. Ik heb nog veel plexiglas platen dus ik kan wel wat foutjes maken.

The middle supports will be covered in stones, there will be a grey slate floor downstairs in the hall. Lots of sliding doors (can I make those???) a fireplace, a simple kitchen (for lots of cooking, they can use the big house) and a shower (they can take a bath in the big house if they want to), wood decking around the house with modern lights and planters and I'm still looking for glass building blocks to allow for more light in the bathroom.

De twee middelste steunen zullen worden bedekt met steen effect, er zal een grijze stenen vloer komen in de hal en trappenhuis. Veel schuifpuien (kan ik die wel maken???), een open haard, een simpele keuken (ze kunnen ook altijd nog in de keuken van het grote huis terecht), een douche (ze kunnen het bad in het grote huis gebruiken), een houten dek rondom het huis met moderne verlichting en plantenbakken en ik zoek nog glazen bouwstenen om meer licht in de badkamer toe te laten.

I have this vision of a very modern house with lots of glass and steel.Well anyway, that's the plan folks.We'll see how that pans out.

Mijn visie is er een van strak modern design, met veel staal en glas. Nou ja, dat is het plan in ieder geval. We zullen zien hoe dat uitpakt!

I made it for the kitchen of the big house. It will provide a nice place for Art and Angélique to take a break from their duties.
Ik heb hem gemaakt voor de keuken van het grote huis. Zo hebben Art en Angélique een plekje om te rusten als ze aan het werk zijn.

As you can see, I still have a lot to do in that house too....

 Zoals je kunt zien heb ik in dat huis ook nog heel veel te doen....
