My polymer rose- mijn fimo roos

I had never heard of polymer clay before but the miniature world uses it profusely so I figured I'd better get myself acquainted with it. Turns out I love it! It doesn't dry out, you can work on as long as you want before baking it, you can mix colours, it keeps really well. Only disadvantages so far is that it attracts dust easily so working on a very clean surface is very important. I use baby-wipes to keep my hands clean. And some colours really stick to your fingers so be careful to clean your hands before handling another colour.

Ik had nog nooit van Fimo klei gehoord maar inde miniatuur wereld wordt het veelvuldig gebruikt dus ik wilde het zelf ook leren. Ik vind het heerlijk spul! Het droogt niet uit terwijl je ermee bezig bent, je kunt het lang bewerken zolang je het niet bakt, je kunt kleuren mengen en het laat zich makkelijk bewaren. Nadelen zijn het afgeven van bepaalde kleuren en het aantrekken van stof. Ik gebruik billendoekjes om mijn handen af te vegen terwijl ik werk.

So polymer roses 1:12 scale...it just needs practice. Really! Gather your polymer clay in the colours you want to use or mix colours together to get the desired shades. And small lengths of wire to make the stems. I did not use molds nor punches. I just rolled out tiny balls of clay into petals and shaped them with an embossing pen.
I bought myself one of those special acrylic rolling pins. Just because I thought it was pretty but you could use a candle or a deodorant stick to roll the clay!

Dus fimo roosjes 1:12: het vergt oefening! Meer niet. Verzamel je klei in de gewenste kleuren of meng de klei. Ik heb voor mezelf een acryl roller gekocht, gewoon omdat hij mooi is maar je kunt ook een kaars gebruiken of een deodorant bus. Wat je maar voorhanden hebt. Verder heb je ook heel dun ijzerdraad nodig in lengtes van ongeveer 5 cm voor de stelen van de bloem. ik heb geen mallen of punches gebruikt. Alleen hele kleine klei balletjes, heel dun uitgerold en "gebold" met een ronde punt (embossing pen of lege ballpoint).

I like to take mini pieces of clay and roll them in tiny balls and then put them between two sheets of cling film. then roll the to be flat petals. Then, while they are still between the cling film I put them on a foam board. With the tip of an embossing pen or an empty pen, I create some shape in the petals.

Ik neem kleine bolletjes klei en leg ze tussen twee lagen vershoudfolie. Dan rol ik ze heel erg dun. Met folie en al leg ik ze op een zachte ondergrond en met een lege pen maak ik de bolling van de bloemblaadjes. Sorry dat ik geen foto's heb gemaakt.
 
Essential when working in miniature is a magnifying glass! To bake my polymer projects I use a glass lid I had left over after the oven dish it belonged to fell and broke.
For the heart of the flower, put a bit of clay on the tip of a wire or glue a glass bead and wrap some clay around it. then attach your leaves to the heart. Keep a picture of a real rose close to see how it is shaped.

Voor mij is het essentieel om een vergrootglas bij de hand te hebben als ik met miniaturen bezig ben. 
Om de klei te bakken gebruik ik de deksel van een glazen ovenschaal die helaas gebroken is.
Voor het hart van de bloem een beetje Fimo om de punt van de ijzerdraad draaien of een glaskraaltje op de draad plakken en daar de klei omheen doen. Hou een foto van een echte roos bij de hand om te zien hoe zo'n bloem is opgebouwd.

I use cling film covered green floral foam to stick the wires I am working on. the cling film prevents the foam from crumbling.  

Ik gebruik oase omwikkeld met vershoudfolie om de steeltjes in te prikken zolang ik ermee bezig ben. De vershoudfolie zorgt ervoor dat de oase niet wegkruimelt en langer meegaat.

 If you are halfway a rose and you are afraid that the next petal might ruin the composition so far, bake it for 10 minutes. It will set but still be flexible. You can use liquid polymer clay to glue the next petal on. 

To bake the roses I use crumpled up aluminium foil and stick the roses on their wire in it. That way they dry standing up.

Mocht je halverwege een bloem heel tevreden zijn met het resultaat dan kun je je bloem even 10 minuten bakken. Het blijft dan beter in vorm maar is nog bewerkbaar. Met wat liquid Fimo kun je het volgende bloemblaadje opplakken.

Ik prik de steeltjes in gefrommelde aluminium folie om ze staand in de over te bakken. Voor het bakken volg de instructies van de klei, ik doe 30 minuten op 110 graden.
Blijf oefenen. De eerste roosjes waren nog wat dik, later werden ze steeds dunner.

Keep practising! My frst roses were still a bit thick but they got thinner as I got the hang of it!
